Inside the ModernTechLap AEO/GEO Audit - a full diagnostic of how ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google's AI Overviews see (or don't see) your business.

Here's an experiment that takes ninety seconds and ruins most founders' afternoons.

Open ChatGPT and ask it the question your best customer would ask before finding you. Not your brand name - the problem. "Best claim-denial software for mid-size hospitals." "Top real estate app development companies." "Which travel platforms offer curated adventure packages in India." Then read the answer carefully and look for your company.

If you're like most businesses we run this test on, one of three things just happened: you weren't mentioned at all, a competitor was recommended in your place, or — the quiet killer — the AI described your business inaccurately, using stale positioning, old pricing, or a category you left two years ago.

That answer is now your first impression. Roughly 68% of Google searches already end without a click (SparkToro), when an AI Overview appears click-through rates nearly halve (Pew Research, 2025), and ChatGPT alone serves over 900 million people a week. The buyer journey increasingly starts — and often ends — inside an AI-generated answer. Whatever the machines say about you, that's your pitch. You just didn't write it.

The good news: what AI engines say about you is measurable, diagnosable, and fixable. That's exactly what the ModernTechLap AEO/GEO Audit was built to do.

Why "just do good SEO" doesn't fix this

A reasonable objection first: "We rank well on Google. Aren't we covered?"

No - and the data on this is blunt. Ahrefs found only about a 7% overlap between the pages ChatGPT cites and Google's top-10 results for the same queries. The majority of citations in AI answers come from pages outside the organic top ten. Answer engines don't read your rankings; they retrieve passages, judge extractability and authority through their own lens, and assemble answers from sources your SEO dashboard has never heard of.

Which means you can be winning the old game and be entirely absent from the new one — and no tool in your current stack will tell you. Traffic reports measure clicks. AI answers don't generate clicks. The result is a blind spot precisely where your buyers now are.

An AEO/GEO audit exists to close that blind spot: to show you, with evidence, how answer engines currently perceive, retrieve, and represent your business — and what specifically to change.

What the ModernTechLap audit actually examines

Plenty of agencies have bolted the letters "GEO" onto their old SEO checklist. So let's be concrete about what a real audit covers. Ours runs across five layers, because AI visibility fails at five different points — and the fix is different at each one.

Layer 1: Visibility benchmarking — what do the engines say right now?

We start by interrogating the engines themselves. We build a panel of 50–100 real buyer prompts for your business — category queries, comparison queries, "best of" queries, problem queries, and brand queries — and run them systematically across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, and Copilot. For each, we record whether you're mentioned, whether you're cited as a source, how you're described, and who is recommended instead of you.

This produces your baseline: a share-of-voice map of AI search. Most clients have never seen one, and it reframes every conversation that follows. It's one thing to suspect competitors are eating your visibility; it's another to see that a rival is cited in 60% of category prompts while you appear in 4%.

Layer 2: Retrievability — can AI systems even reach your content?

AI crawlers are not Googlebot. GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, and Google-Extended each obey their own rules, and we routinely find sites that block them in robots.txt without knowing it — sometimes from a security plugin's default, sometimes from a CDN's bot protection quietly serving them empty pages. We also find the opposite problem: JavaScript-heavy sites whose content simply doesn't exist in the raw HTML that many AI retrievers read.

This layer checks crawler access, rendering, site performance, and indexation from an AI retriever's point of view. It's unglamorous plumbing, and it's the most common reason otherwise good content earns zero citations. No content strategy survives a locked door.

Layer 3: Extractability — is your content quotable by a machine?

Engines cite passages, not websites. So we audit whether your pages are built to be lifted: direct answers placed near the top instead of buried under storytelling, headings that mirror actual questions, tables and structured comparisons (which get cited at a multiple of prose), FAQ blocks, and current schema markup — Organization, Product, FAQ, Article — implemented correctly rather than decoratively.

The Princeton GEO research showed that content carrying clear statistics, quotations, and cited sources gains roughly 30–40% more visibility in AI answers. We score every key page against those factors and hand you a page-by-page rewrite priority list — not "improve your content," but this paragraph, on this page, restructured this way.

Layer 4: Entity and authority — does the machine know who you are?

When an AI engine decides whether to trust you, it's really asking: is this a coherent, corroborated entity? We audit how consistently your company exists across the sources engines lean on — your knowledge-graph presence, directory and review-platform footprint, Wikipedia-adjacent references, LinkedIn coherence, and whether third-party sites describe you the way you describe yourself. Ahrefs data shows ChatGPT's most-cited pages skew heavily toward high-authority domains, and earned media drives the overwhelming majority of brand citations.

This is where ModernTechLap is structurally different from a pure consultancy: we operate a tech publishing and PR placement platform. We don't just tell you that you need credible third-party coverage to be citation-worthy — building that coverage is our home turf.

Layer 5: The citation gap — who's winning your prompts, and why?

Finally, we reverse-engineer the winners. For every prompt where a competitor gets cited and you don't, we pull the actual cited page and break down why the engine chose it — the data it contained, its structure, its source authority, its freshness. The output is a citation-gap matrix: the specific prompts you're losing, the specific pages beating you, and the specific asset you'd need to build to flip each one.

This is the layer that turns an audit from a report into a plan.

What you walk away with

Every engagement ends with three deliverables: an AI Visibility Scorecard benchmarking you against up to five competitors across every major engine; a prioritized 90-day roadmap sequenced by impact and effort — quick technical wins first, content restructuring second, authority-building third; and a working session with your team where we walk through the findings, in plain language, until the path is unambiguous. No black boxes, no jargon walls, no fifty-page PDF that dies in a drawer.

And because AI answers shift as models update, we re-run the prompt panel after implementation, so you can see share-of-voice actually move — the metric that matters now, measured the only way it can be.

Who should do this now — and who can wait

Candidly, not everyone needs this yet. If your business is purely local and word-of-mouth, you can probably wait a year.

But if buyers research your category before purchasing — software, healthcare services, real estate, travel, professional services, anything considered — the window matters more than the urgency headlines suggest, for one structural reason: AI answers compound. Engines lean on sources they've already cited; early winners become the default citation for a category, and displacing an entrenched source is far harder than becoming one. The businesses getting audited and restructured in 2026 are setting the answers their markets will read for years.

The first move costs you nothing: run the ninety-second experiment at the top of this page. If you like what the machines say about you, close this tab. If you don't - that's what we're for.
